Poll: Obama Won First Debate
The latest CNN/Opinion Research poll has Barack Obama winning the first presidential debate with John McCain by a margin of 51 percent to 38 percent. Men scored it 46-43 McCain; women scored the debate 59-31 to Obama.
While about 20 percent of respondents thought both candidates underperformed, 57 percent said Obama exceeded their expectations and 60 percent said that of McCain. McCain outdid Obama on national security by a slim margin, 49 to 45.
On economic issues, Obama won 58 percent to McCain's 37 percent. However, 41 percent of respondents were Democrats and 27 percent were Republican. That sample is five to seven percentage points more Democratic than the general public as a whole.
