Britney Spears beats Barack Obama
Britney Spears beats Barack Obama
Maybe John McCain should be taking lessons from Britney Spears.
The oft-troubled pop star did something this year that the Republican nominee for President failed to do — beat Barack Obama.
Oops, President Spears?
No, don't panic, Spears did not win the presidency in any weird Florida-like hanging chad business. But she did top the President-elect this year in terms of online search — at least at Yahoo anyway.
Amazingly, Britney Spears was the most popular search term on Yahoo for the fourth year in a row. Get this — she's been the top searched term in seven of the last eight years.
Zero to Hero
Why? Vera Chan, senior editor of Yahoo Buzz, told the BBC it's all about redemption. The diva was a disaster in 2007 and has tried to overcome her monstrosity of troubles in 2008 — thus the continued interest.
"She was number one last year for all the wrong reasons, and this year for all the right reasons," Ms Chan said.
"People like redemption tales. You can't have a public meltdown that big and not have people follow you."
There was buzz that Obama might top the charts this year. Nope. He came in third — sandwiched between WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) and Miley Cyrus.
Filling out the top ten: the online game RuneScape in at number four, actress Jessica Alba (five), the cartoon series Naruto (six), actresses Lindsay Lohan and Angelina Jolie (seven and eight), Arnold Schwarzenegger (nine) and reality TV talent show American Idol (ten).
Political searches
In terms of political figures, Obama was number one. Got a guess for number two?
Correct. The thrilla from Wasilla — Sarah Palin.
Now, Yahoo isn't giving out specific figures so we don't know how close Palin was to Obama, but we do know order of the top ten political figures searched:
1. Barack Obama
2. Sarah Palin
3. John McCain
4. Hillary Clinton
5. George Bush
6. Ron Paul
7. John Edwards
8. Mike Huckabee
9. Arnold Schwarzenegger
10. Mitt Romney
Pop love
Why does pop culture dominate search terms? Yahoo Buzz explains it this way:
"Britney or Runescape is not in the news everyday, so people go online for updates. George W. Bush, on the other hand, is in the news quite often, so people need fewer updates. Also, as a past spokesperson once explained, after you get to a level of fame, you don't even have to do anything to maintain it."

Britney Spears sleepwalks, lip-syncs on Good Morning America
Britney Spears sleepwalks, lip-syncs on 'Good Morning America'
Happy 27th birthday, Britney!
Britney Spears performed two numbers on "Good Morning America" today, an event that's been hyped for weeks and weeks to coincide with her birthday and her new "Circus" album release.
So, with all that nonstop rehearsing we saw her doing on her MTV documentary, why did her GMA routine still remind some viewers of her disastrous Video Music Awards performance?
Not that she didn't look good. Make that great. But just like she did in London earlier this week, Britney seemed to lip-sync and stumble her way through her songs.
British fans watching her performance on "X Factor" were reportedly outraged about her not really singing. Her U.S. fans may be a little more forgiving of (and used to) her faux singing, but it's still a little disconcerting to watch.
I saw her perform in Vegas a few years back. Sat in the front row. Close enough to see that she didn't sing a note. Lip-sync City. But was the performance fun, sexy and lively? Sure was.
Sadly, her previously energetic dance style is still MIA. In her GMA performance "Womanizer," there was that familiar strutting sleepwalker stomp, eerily reminiscent of her attempted 2007 comeback on MTV.
But one wonders, why can't she sing and dance at the same time? It's like those slow stomping moves would have caused her to be out of breath.
Maybe Britney is just not a morning person?
As far as finding out about Britney's birthday plans or talking about her MTV documentary, Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts barely got two questions out about her upcoming concert tour.
"You're starting at home, right?" Sawyer asked helpfully, following a question about the beginning of her new tour.
A seemingly confused Britney said, "Yes, in America."
Roberts added, "In New Orleans!"
Um, yeah, as the hosts pointed out enthusiastically, that is Britney's hometown. Woo hoo!
Oh dear. Poor Brit Brit.
Anyway, what did you think of Britney's GMA performance? Thumbs up or kinda down?

Britney Spears Celebrates 27th Birthday Under the Big Top
Britney Spears celebrated her 27th birthday Tuesday under the Big Top and before the TV cameras of Good Morning America.
Dressed as a ringmaster, Spears made her entrance atop a circus wagon – accompanied by clowns, jugglers and performers dressed as circus animals. For her second number, "Womanizer," Spears smashed through a fiery hoop.
Afterwards, she announced that her concert tour would begin in New Orleans March 3. Then came the cake.
The appearance, inside the Big Apple Circus tent within New York's Lincoln Center, also marked the launch of Spears's sixth studio album, Circus – her first CD since her 2007 comeback step, Blackout.
Mother and Sons Attend
As Spears announces on the title track (and delivered on GMA), "There are only two types of people in the world, the ones that entertain and the ones that observe." GMA's Robin Roberts called Spears's appearance "our concert event of the year."
Claimed cohost Diane Sawyer about those gathered inside the circus tent, "There are about a gazillion people [here]."
Among them: the pop star's mother, Lynne Spears, and Britney's two young sons, Preston and Jayden.
Interspersed with the promos for Spears's performance during Tuesday's GMA were birthday greetings from the likes of Reese Witherspoon, John Travolta, Nicollette Sheridan, Teri Hatcher and PEOPLE's newly named Sexiest Man Alive, Hugh Jackman – who sang "Happy Birthday" and blew her a kiss.
"You look great," Witherspoon relayed to Spears, "and I hope you have a great day." Added Taylor Swift: "You have been officially awesome for 27 years."
On Sunday, Spears's MTV special, Britney: For the Record, which documented some of her personal problems of the past year, was watched by more than 3.7 million viewers, according to the cable music network. Those are high numbers for
