Netflix updated and redesigned all its video streaming apps for tablets yesterday.  The "more immersive" interface will debut on the the latest versions of the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and soon on the Apple iPad.

"In the last 12 months we have seen a threefold increase in how long Netflix members are watching on their tablets," Neil Hunt, chief product officer at Netflix said in a statement. "We're happy to debut a new user experience coinciding with the release of the next generation of devices from industry leaders. The new Netflix interface offers a significant improvement in browsing and searching for TV shows and movies to instantly watch."

Netflix previously had an app for Android tablets, but this upgrade coincides with the release of two new devices analysts expect to perform well this holiday season: the Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire. Both have 7″ touchscreens and are based on the Android operating system. They are poised to compete for the low-end ($250 and under) tablet market.

It is notable that Netflix will run on the Kindle Fire, given that the competitor Amazon Prime subscription service for streaming video is built into the device.

Zal Bilimoria, mobile products manager at Netflix, claimed on the company blog that the new interface will display twice as many movies and TV shows as the previous version. He also said that users will now be able to "swipe through rows of tiles featuring larger artwork."

Based on photos released (see below), the app looks similar to the Netflix website interface. There is a new "Continue Watching" row at the top that may be convenient to resume multiple shows and movies that users didn't get a chance to finish.
